On a dimly lit and dead-end lane, shadows of Halloweens past drift along in search of tricks or treats. Soft laughter mingles with rustling paper bags, and a shuffle of small feet padding softly along the pavement; sounds of Trick or Treat when it was still a revered holiday children looked forward to with shivery anticipation.

Along SomberFright Lane the porchlamps are dark, and at the end of the lane is the old mansion, long in ruin, steeped in legend. A walkway cast in shadows bear the lure of an unlit path, yet the sounds that reach our ears as we stand upon a darkened street tell us that Halloween has come.

And we turn away from the weed-covered path, hoping to escape what we fear is following.

Despite the absence of plastic-fanged draculas and nylon ghosts, something glides along the lane, something rustles past before silence settles once again. Who's tricks shall reap the treats this night, the night of all ghoulish pranks and scares?

Why does the wind carry the scent of hot pumpkin and wax when no jack-o-lantern is seen? what sends us running home to lock the doors and windows, and who knocks upon the door at this late and chilly hour? Was that muffled giggling we hear echoing from the shadows?

What will a well-lit path invite on this evening of falling leaves and moonlight? What will we see if we part the curtains, open the door and peek outside? Who's voice will we hear should we press our ear against the pane? And if we resist the tempation to run back home as fast as our feet will carry us, what will we find?

Who dares walk the Lane on Halloween night? We do!
