Cemetery Dog: Grab a cup of coffee or tea, have a seat, and listen to this....
A couple weeks ago or so we went shooting (photos, that is), and we decided to go to the historic Magnolia Cemetery here in Mobile. It's registered in the national historic society's registry and dates back to the early 1800's (at least). But, there's also a newer section there as well. Anyway, we were taking photos of the monuments, etc., walking around, and we had parked in one location and walked a little bit. We were heading towards a grave that a gigantic oak was growing out of. The tree had pushed the cement lid on its side, if that tells you how dead-center (no pun intended) this tree was growing. Now, this 'incident' I'm going to tell you about I don't believe has anything to do with that grave, per se. At least I don't think it does.... but here it is... There was a dog, a chow (black or chocolate brown), that was suddenly there some 10ft away from us. it was obvious this dog was a stray by its appearance. We didn't think anything of the dog really until it showed us its teeth. at that point we thought maybe we should just turn around and slowly walk away. And we did. and the dog followed. The entire way back to the truck this dog was growling, gnashing its teeth (no exaggeration here), circling us... and very very close, maybe a foot and a half away from us the whole time. Mike had tried to shoo it away a few times... but the dog was having none of that and kept its close proximity to us the entire way. We made it to the truck, unscathed, thank goodness. As we were leaving we looked back and saw the dog sitting on the grass at the edge of the road just watching us. Mike and I looked at each other, laughed nervously, and took a deep breath. Trust me, I think we were both holding our breaths during that whole thing. As we drove off we looked back... and the dog was gone. Nowhere to be seen at all. We drove around the cemetery for some 15 minutes or so and never found that dog again. But... this isn't the creepy part, although it wasn't exactly something I want to repeat again. I called my youngest son (locally) and told him what happened. He said that he had a similar experience, almost identical, at the cemetery in Biloxi, MS on Irish Hill Rd. Same type of dog (a chow), same experience. But.... that's not the creepy part.... .....now about that article I found online: I ran across this web site this morning with a story about a black chow guarding a cemetery...in IN. The story sounded so familiar, TOO familiar. This dog, too, used to run people off, was very aggressive, etc. The dog we encountered here was TOO aggressive. Most dog behavior, when they're afraid, is to show aggression until you leave. Most dogs wont 'escort' you a certain distance and then leave you be. And if the dog's aggressive to the point of attack, they will. This one looked like he/she could or would, but didn't. For all practical purposes it appeared as if this dog were guarding something. What we don't know. But what we do know is that this dog's behavior was not normal, not even for a fearful dog. |
